Meet the GovernorsOur school governors are valued members of the school community who give up their own time to support our school. They are a mixed body of volunteers consisting of parents and staff governors, local community governors and local authority governors. Their role is to act as a “critical friend” to the school, ensuring accountability and helping to monitor and evaluate performance. Although they are volunteers, they have a huge role to play in the strategic improvement of the school. They have a broad wealth of experience and knowledge which they draw upon when making decisions in the best interests of the children who attend our school. They meet as a full governing body once every half term, covering all aspects of the running of the school. As a Governing Body, they play a crucial and important role in how our school moves forward. They care about all the children who attend our school and their families, and want them to feel happy and safe whilst reaching their full potential. The main focus of ourGoverning Body is ensuring that our students make good progress in their education and we appreciate that for this to happen the school must be well-led by a professionally competent leadership team with motivated staff who all work together within a safe, caring, supportive yet professionally challenging environment. Our Governors feel privileged to support St Austin’s Primary School and are extremely proud of all its achievements. As your views are extremely important to the Governing Body of the school, we hope you will feel you can ask any questions. In addition to this, we currently have two Associate members and one Clerk to the Governing Body. The number of governors in each category is set out in the Instrument of Government. Foundation Governors
Foundation governors at the school represent the interests of the Archdiocese of Liverpool who are trustees of the school. The role of the foundation governor is to ensure that the school is clearly recognisable as Christian in its ethos and that its role is seen in the provision for Catholic children of the Archdiocese.
Associate Members
The governing body may, if it sees fit, appoint ‘Associate Members’. Associate Members are not governors, are not named as a category in the Instrument of Government. They do not have voting rights in full governing body meetings, however; they are allowed to vote as a member of any committee to which they are appointed, following approval by the full governing body.
Staff Governors
The Headteacher is automatically eligible to be a full member of the Governing Body by virtue of the office. Both teaching and support staff who are paid to work at the school are eligible to stand as staff governor. They are elected by all other members of staff currently at our school. Our school currently has two staff governors.
Parent Governors
Parents/Carers of pupils registered at our school are eligible to stand for election as a parent governor. They are elected by all other parents/carers of pupils registered at the school. Our school currently has two elected parent governors.
Local Authority Governors
The local authority governor is a person nominated by the local authority and appointed by the governing body. The local authority will normally enquire what skills are needed before making a nomination and will often consider nominating a person suggested by the governing body. Local authority nominations are no longer linked to political affiliation and there is no requirement on a local authority governor to attend any other meetings of the authority.
